Join tap dance innovator Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards for a
free open jam session in which some of the finest of New
York City's rhythm tap community come together to share and
showcase their moves. The evening features live musical
accompaniment by pianist Theo Hill's trio and promises to
make for a unique and exciting gathering of rhythmic
exchange. The jam is open to tap dancers of all levels and
concludes with Leonard Reed's famous Shim Sham Shimmy, the
hoofers' international anthem. So come enjoy the show or
bring your shoes and join the jam!

CHICAGO—The Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP), the
world's only
year-round presenter of American tap dance and contemporary
percussive arts, opens its 19th season with its annual
Winter Tap
JAMboree February 28–March 1, 2009 at the Beverly Arts
Center, 2407
W. 111th St. in Chicago. Directed by CHRP Associate
Director Martin
"Tre" Dumas, the weekend features a Winter Workshop of
master
classes, Leo Harris Tap Scholarship audition and the
Chicago premiere
of the award-winning documentary The Wonder Kids.
Written, produced and directed by Jim Petersen and
Pamela J. Richardson, The Wonder Kids is the inspiring
story of a
tiny dance studio that set out to save the art form of tap
dancing,
which not only produced many of the world's greatest
dancers, but
transformed the lives of thousands of inner-city kids in
the process.
Narrated by legendary hoofer Dick Van Dyke and featuring
Savion
Glover, Debbie Allen, Jason Samuels Smith and other tap
greats, the
film earned the prestigious Grand Jury Pr
ize for Best Documentary at
the New York International Film and Video Festival in 2008.
The
Chicago premiere of this inspiring film takes place
Saturday,
February 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12; proceeds benefit
CHRP's Leo
Harris Tap Scholarship program.
On both Saturday and Sunday, February 28 and March 1,
CHRP will host its Winter Workshop, a series of 21 classes
at the
intermediate, advanced and professional levels. Instructors
include
Tony nominee and Chicago native Ted Levy, who is CHRP's
2009 Artist
in Residence; CHRP Associate Director, Mayfair Academy
alumnus and
Jus'LisTeN Director Martin "Tre" Dumas; Dianne "Lady Di"
Walker, who was recently named a U.S. Artists Fellow;
Idella Reed of
the Sammy Dyer School of Theater and Dance; independent New
York City
artist Lisa La Touche; and Ashley DeForest, formerly of
Savion
Glover's company and director of DeForest Dance Academy. In
honor of
African-American History Month, the instructors will focus
on the
music of Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Oscar
Peterson
and Miles Davis. Classes are $25 each plus a $15
registration fee. A

The 14th annual Leo Harris Rhythm World Scholarship
audition, which recognizes Leo's Dancewear founder Leo
Harris's
contribution to the dance community and Leo's Dancewear's
generous
support of tap and all forms of dance, takes place Sunday,
March 1
from 3 to 5 p.m. JAMboree faculty will serve as judges,
awarding
$15,000 in scholarships to aspiring, amateur tap artists
between the
ages of 12 and 18, which they will use for classes during
CHRP's
Rhythm World festival in July-August 2009. CHRP invites
members of
the public to participate in a free "You Be the Judge"
event
during the auditions, choosing their favorite of the
competitors. The
winner will receive a $1,000 Rhythm World scholarship and a
free pair
of Leo's Crescendo Pro tap shoes. The audition entry fee is
$10.

Dance in

All-Star line-up plays Jamaican Jazz Fusion, Feb 26
Co-presented with the
Columbia/Harlem Jazz Project
Several generations of internationally renowned Jamaican musicians come together for this landmark event that celebrates the many influences of world music on jazz. The spectacular evening features guitarist Ernest Ranglin, acclaimed for helping to give birth to ska and for his magnificent ability to blend jazz and reggae. Joining Ranglin are Douglas Ewart, the multi-instrumentalist and visual artist, whose superb playing weaves together jazz with contemporary classical music and Caribbean folkloric music; and saxophonist Cedric "Im" Brooks, whose artful jazz combines such musical forms as calypso, funk, rhumba, junkunoo, ska, and disco. Also featuring
Orville Hammond (piano), Wayne Batchelor (string bass), Desmond Jones (drums), Larry McDonald (conga). The passionate and accomplished playing of these jazz greats shines through in this remarkable concert, curated by distinguished cultural historian Herbie Miller, the director/curator designate of Jamaica's National Music Museum.

Kalup Linzy is known for his absurdly humorous drag-performance-based videos in which he repurposes the narrative style of daytime television soaps in order to explore complicated relationships between race, class, gender, sexuality, and popular culture. For these evenings, he debuts a new, solo theatrical work exploring related themes, in which he plays piano, sings, and is accompanied by video projections that feature his ever-expanding cast of riotous chara
Visual and performance artist Rashaad Newsome presents the premiere of Shade Compositions, a live performance featuring a a chorus of more than twenty black women. Influenced by improvisatory orchestral music and live video-mixing, Newsome divides his performers into groups akin to instrumental sections as they enact his choreographed sound score made up of repeated sequences of culturally specific or stereotypical gestures, movements, and vocalizations. Newsome simultaneously records, loops, edits, and remixes in real-time the audio and video documentation of the performers using a hacked Nintendo® Wii™ game controller. The resulting layers of real and projected imagery investigate assumptions and constructions of identity in mainstream media and popular culture.

Access Dance/USA Scholarships Applications Now Available!
Dance/USA is pleased to announce the fourth round of Access Dance/USA, a scholarship program designed to subsidize attendance to the Dance/USA Annual Conference for dance administrators, dance artists, and independent choreographers. This year, Access Dance/USA scholarships will be awarded to fourteen members from the New York City community to attend the Dance/USA Annual Conference, June 3-6, 2009 in Houston, Texas. Scholarships are available for both member and non-member first-time attendees and are intended to help defray the costs of conference registration, transportation to Houston, and hotel and dining expenses during the conference.

OPPORTUNITY:
MADD Rhythms still needs 10 more 14-18 year old tap dancers with 1-3 years of tap classes under their belts.
ATTENTION ALL HOOFERS-TO-BE:
The Better Boys Foundation (BBF) has 10 spots available in MADD Rhythms @ BBF, an after-school tap dancing troupe that meets from 4:30-7:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the BBF Center (1512 South Pulaski Road). You must be between the ages of 14 and 18 years old, be able to attend every scheduled class, and be ready and motivated to participate fully in all program activities. This program is funded through the City of Chicago's After School Matters (ASM) program. It is an apprenticeship program, and you be paid a stipend for your participation as long as you meet all attendance and discipline requirements. The spring program begins on Monday, 2/2 and runs through mid April.
If you are interested, you must act quickly and follow these instructions:
1. Log on to the ASM website at www.afterschoolmatters.org.
2. Click the "apply for a program in your community" link.
3. On the Option 2 page, use the "search by keyword" option and enter MADD.
4. Select MADD Rhythms at BBF.
5. On the Step 3 page, click to continue.
6. On the Step 4 page, answer all questions and submit.
7. On the Step 5 page, complete all info (you will need you student ID# and SS#).
8. On the Step 6 page, complete the survey.
9. Final step: Print your confirmation page (if you can/have a printer)
10. IMPORTANT: Call Ms. Enna Jennings at BBF at 773-542-7340 to schedule an interview ASAP (before the end of the is week)

A breakdown of how the Senate voted on the Coburn Amendment/including the arts in the economic stimulus bill (at the end of the email) and an Update from the Americans for the Arts

Breaking News
On the afternoon of Feb 6th, the U.S. Senate, during their consideration of the economic recovery bill, approved an egregious amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) that stated "None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project." Unfortunately, the amendment passed by a wide vote margin of 73-24, and surprisingly included support from many high profile Senators including Chuck Schumer of New York, Dianne Feinstein of California, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and several other Democratic and Republican Senators.
If the Coburn amendment language is included in the final conference version of this legislation, many arts groups will be prevented from receiving economic recovery funds from any portion of this specific stimulus bill. It is clear that there is still much work to be done in the Senate and in the media about the role that nonprofit arts organizations and artists play in the nation's economy and workforce.
Plan of Action
1. Arts advocates need to quickly contact Senators who voted for the Coburn Amendment and express your extreme disappointment with their vote. We need these Senators to know that their vote would detrimentally impact nonprofit arts organizations and the jobs they support in their state. We have crafted a customized message for you to send to your Senators based on their vote on the Coburn Amendment.

The correct letter, customized to each of your Senators will appear when you enter your zip code. If your Senator voted for this funding prohibition, you can send them a message expressing your disappointment and ask them to work to delete this language in the final conference bill with the House. If your Senator voted against the Coburn Amendment, you can thank them for their support of the arts.
2. We need as many news articles as possible this coming week to publish stories about the economic impact of the nonprofit arts industry and how the recession is negatively affecting arts groups across the country. As you may know, I am the Honorary Spokesperson for NATIONAL DANCE WEEK. Our organization brings focus to dance and all the benefits that dance offers. Through the years our National Spokespersons have included: Chita Rivera, Paula Abdul, Gus Giordano, Anne Reinking, Shirley McLaine, Debbie Allen, Gregory Hines, Luigi, Ben Vereen and Debbie Allen.
A new project that is being undertaken on the national level is both a fundraiser and marketing endeavor for NDW. It is the NATIONAL DANCE WEEK COOK BOOK. This book will be sold on the NDW website and will be available through United Dance Merchants of America.
As a dance luminary you represent all the best dance has to offer, and your participation in this project would help bring attention to the importance of dance. With that in mind, I am asking you for up to 3 recipes that we would feature in the cookbook, along with any fun stories about the food and the memories.
We have approached all of our past National Spokespersons as well as many dancers, dance companies, choreographers and suppliers to submit recipes for this project.
